Instructional Technology
Instructor: Ms. McKay
Welcome to Signal Hill's Instructional Technology Page and Computer Lab!

In the computer lab, we have 29 computers to prepare students for a changing technological world.  We seek to integrate technology into the curriculum.  In the lab, we complete projects using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Kidspiration, keyboarding programs and more.  We also use the Internet for research and discovery.  Internet safety is emphasized.  We have recently opened a second lab with laptop computers.  Additionally, Signal Hill has 2 rolling laptop carts so that students may have as much access to technology as possible.

Computer Lab Projects
We are working on a variety of exciting projects to enhance students’ technology skills. All students reviewed computer care and basic computer hardware parts, and fifth graders discussed servers and networks as well. Some examples of projects we have completed this year follow.

Grade 1: First graders worked in drawing programs and created seasonal pictures. We also illustrated scenes from books students read in class. First graders have also worked in Internet based reading and math programs. They have created neighborhood maps and animal, plant and insect habitats on the computer. For the next several weeks, students will work on beginning keyboarding, and learn skills to use a word processing program.

Grade 2: Second grade students have created maps of their community and described their community in a graphics and writing program. They have reviewed life cycles by using graphics and text to show and describe the life cycles of frogs, butterflies and plants.    Students have studied geometry using our math program. They have created original artwork and maps in a drawing program. We will begin to work on word processing skills for the next several weeks.

Grade 3: Students have worked in a keyboarding program to develop and enhance their keyboarding skills. Third graders have also worked in PowerPoint to create plural words and illustrated the features of various environments to reinforce their knowledge of this 3rd grade objective. Third grade students will also start working with the features of word processing programs.

Grade 4: Fourth graders have worked on their keyboarding skills and have researched materials for classroom projects on the Internet. They have worked in vocabulary and SOL review websites and are starting to work with the various features of word processing programs.

Grade 5: Fifth graders began the school year with a review of keyboarding. They have worked in vocabulary, math and SOL review websites. They have completed Internet research on animal species and reviewed Internet search strategies. Students have completed spreadsheets to track winter holiday expenses and used graphics programs. Fifth graders will also explore the various features of word processing programs during the next several weeks to improve their skills.
